Navigating the Waves:
A Journey of Academic
and Personal Excellence
Achieving our academic, professional, and personal goals is rarely smooth sailing. Frequently, there are ripples, storms, and sometimes tidal waves that challenge us at a core level – challenging us in a way that, once we move through the passage of time, ensures we will never be the same.
Nearing the completion of my Master’s degree, I find myself reflecting on my own academic journey: the ripples, storms, and tidal waves that I have navigated through to achieve and maintain rigorous academic goals while sustaining my well-being, business, and home life.
Today, I am proud and honoured to say my efforts for the 2025 academic year were recognised. For a second consecutive year, I have been awarded Griffith University’s Award for Academic Excellence for my Master of Rehabilitation Counselling studies.
While navigating these waters, I maintained a GPA of 6.0+, achieving a 7.0 (High Distinction) in Human Resources and Employee Relations. These results are more than just numbers to me; they represent the evidence-informed rigour I bring to every client at Blu Ripples, and how negative programming and the opinions of others can be used as fuel to motivate and drive your vessel forward—even when the winds, tides, and seas are against you.
Practicing What I Preach: The Navigation Tools
Navigating my university program and the associated storms was not a matter of sheer luck or willpower; it involved deep self-reflection, determination, and the consistent utilisation of the strategies I share with my clients.
To stay on course, I leaned on the tools found in my Self-Care Awareness, Action and Planning Workbook and Card Set. For example, I ensured that I performed regular check-ins, asking myself, “Am I OK?” and taking immediate action if I was not. This meant engaging my “Power of Five” (my essential support structure) and utilising “Beach Therapy” to reset my perspective when the seas became too rough.
Integrating self-care while undertaking a Master’s degree may not have been a daily occurrence, but by committing to even a few strategies a week, I managed to persevere. I achieved my goal of a second Academic Excellence Award – and if you knew my back story, I am sure you would agree this is a milestone to be truly proud of. I constantly reminded myself: I don’t have to be perfect. I simply need to do my best, keep going, and look after me. In doing so, I ensured that I practiced what I preach.
