Selection Criteria &
Key Capability Writing Services
Helping you clearly, concisely, and strategically express your professional background, competencies, and knowledge
Navigating Public & Private Sector Recruitment with Clarity
Blu Ripples’ Selection Criteria Writing Services date back to 2003, when founder Katherine Foster, then trading as HR Aspects, began preparing tailored selection criteria responses for clients spanning the entire career lifespan cycle. Today, we apply that same curious, person-centred, and strategic approach across public sector, local government, higher education, and corporate applications Australia-wide.
While traditional selection criteria remain standard practice across many agencies and select private sector organisations, public sector recruitment has evolved significantly. Since the widespread introduction of frameworks like the NSW Public Sector Capability Framework in 2013, the primary focus has shifted toward Key Capability Framework responses.
Differences:
Traditional Selection Criteria vs. Key Capability Responses
While both frameworks rely on the established STAR methodology (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to effectively demonstrate your capacity and suitability against an advertised position’s criteria, the underlying response strategy is fundamentally different:
Traditional Selection Criteria primarily require evidence of technical capability, such as skills and knowledge.
Example: “Must demonstrate well-developed communication skills.”
Key Capability Responses primarily require evidence of behavioural application, such as behaviour, attributes, and mindsets.
Example: “Communicates Effectively — Expresses complex ideas clearly, listens attentively, and adapts communication styles for diverse audiences.”
To the untrained applicant’s eye, and even the untrained professional selection criteria or capability writer’s eye, these requirements can appear almost identical because both request a narrative example of how you have applied these criteria to your work. However, answering a behavioural criterion with a skills or knowledge response may inadvertently cause your application to fall short against the skills matrix.
At Blu Ripples® Selection Criteria and Key Capability Writing Services, aim to help you bridge the gap between knowing how to do your job and knowing how to clearly and concisely articulate your statement of claim to meet the skills matrix and engage the recruitment and selection panel.
How Our 1-on-1 Consultation Process Can Help You!
Our 1-on-1 Selection Criteria and Key Capability Framework consultations are designed to help you explore your academic and professional history, unpacking your strengths, achievements, and core attributes to articulate clear, concise, meaningful, and evidence-informed STAR responses.
Specifically, during our collaborative consultation we aim to:
Deconstruct the Advertised Role & Framework:
- Analyse the position description, capability levels (Foundational, Adept, Advanced), or the essential and desirable criteria.
Uncover Your Strongest Examples:
- Verbally explore your professional and academic history to identify meaningful, high-impact incidents, events, projects, or functions that demonstrate your capabilities.
Address Gaps Strategically:
- Formulate and establish clear and achievable action strategies to address current gaps by highlighting key transferable skills, intended education or development pursuits, and realistic timeframes.
Demystify the Skills Matrix & Refine Your Statement of Claim:
- Explain, if necessary, the skills matrix concept and structure your professional response narrative so hiring panels and decision-makers can easily identify and map your experience directly to their skills matrix.
